It has been a sad week in our home. We had to put down our sweet dog Sadie. She had 14 good years, and although there have been a lot of tears for me and Nate the past few days, I'm going to try and write about some of the memories I have of her-most of which were annoying at the time, but make me laugh now.
1. Her incredible ability to escape from anywhere-I mean ANYWHERE.
2. The time I thought it was a good idea to ride my bike with her leash wrapped around my handle bar. Then Sadie saw a squirrel and bee lined for it thrusting me up and over the front of the bike. After that, I had to walk Sadie (and my bike) home. I recovered with a few minor cuts and bruises, but the bike never did.
3. The way she would glide like a deer when left to run in open spaces. I loved how I could bend down on one knee from across the field and she would barrel towards me and whiz past me just skimming my side as if to say "catch me if you can!" I never could.
4. Her insatiable love of butter. Baking just won't be the same without her waiting to lick the butter wrappers.
5. In high school when I bought an awesome pair of doc martins and left them on the ground, and came home to them eaten up to pieces. I can't say that is the last pair of shoes she has eaten of mine.
6. Every night as she slept at the foot of my bed I would jolt awake to her a high-pitched howl anytime a distant fire or police siren rang.
7. Her particular affection for very small dogs. I think this started with her first friend Chummley (a shiz tzu). At the dog park she had a knack for picking out the tiniest dogs to befriend and play with.
8. Most of all I will miss her desire to lick everyone. She never got enough of this, and children especially loved it.
Rest in Peace Sadie. You will be forever missed.
